Ralph J. Bunche Project
REMEMBER…
WHEN there was a school on First Street called Ralph J. Bunche, named for the well-known African American diplomat and Nobel Prize Winner?
WHEN the school on First Street became a Rosenwald school in the 1920s?
WHEN the school on First Street served African American students from 1904 until integration?
Most of the buildings are gone. The land is mostly vacant but now considered “hallowed” ground by those who attended school there.
The Weldon School Board still owns the property. Weldon In Action has been collaborating with the School Board to design an outdoor garden with seating areas and walkways for residents and visitors to enjoy--and a place where they can learn about the leaders who guided the education of students for seven decades.
Members of the School Board will join us in our Weldon In Action meeting on April 17 (note: Wednesday, not the normal Thursday) at HCC to celebrate our partnership in creating a historical legacy for future generations to remember when…
We will show designs of the first phase of the project and talk about its features and the kinds of markers that will depict the history of the school and Weldon’s early history, which began on First Street.
We want to hear your thoughts.
Join us in thanking the School Board for its vision and support in turning a vacant historical site into an outdoor place to bring pleasure to all who enter the area. It will provide every visitor an opportunity to appreciate the school’s unique contribution to the life and future of Weldon.
Place: HCC Building 800, Room 825
Date: Wednesday, April 17
