Canal trail project

Nestled along the scenic Roanoke River in Weldon, the Roanoke Canal Trail offers a breathtaking 7.5-mile stretch of natural beauty and outdoor serenity. As visitors embark on the trail, they are greeted by the soothing sounds of the river and surrounded by lush, green landscapes. The trail winds its way through picturesque woodlands and open spaces, providing a peaceful retreat for hikers, joggers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Along the route, the Roanoke River unveils its splendor, reflecting the changing hues of the sky and creating a harmonious blend of water and wilderness.

Despite its scenic allure, the Roanoke Canal Trail is not without its challenges. The need for improvement becomes apparent as sections of the trail show signs of overgrowth and storm debris. Currently, the trail does not follow the river entirely, as would seem the natural inclination from the Weldon trailhead at River Falls Park. Instead, visitors need to follow the path on the pavement past Weldon Mills Distillery, go under the highway through a tunnel, and make their way down barren First Street to rejoin the beautiful natural trail just past Riverside Mill. The bleakness of the “official” canal trail along First Street is uninviting and confusing.

With leadership from a Weldon In Action member and assistance from the Halifax County Economic Development Commission, a $35,000 planning grant was secured through the NC Department of Transportation Bike and Pedestrian project to explore walkways and pedestrian needs throughout town. Results from the surveys and community input (Bike and Pedestrian Report) are available through the Town Administrator’s office. 109 Washington Ave, Weldon, NC. There is also a contact form on the Town of Weldon website. The Bike and Pedestrian report sets forth priorities for improvements to bike paths and walkways and for a loop trail and trail along Chockoyotte Creek to address areas that impact public safety, public health, and recreation.

In the meantime, the existing Canal trail needs maintenance. Clean-up days are usually scheduled by the Town of Weldon two to three times a year.  Often volunteers and donations are needed. Local community efforts and support for trail upkeep can contribute to the longevity of this outdoor gem, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the tranquility and splendor that the Roanoke Canal Trail has to offer.
