  • Encourage community engagement.

  • Assist in economic development.

  • Create accessible public gathering places.

  • Honor our rich history.

our projects

  • Ralph J. Bunche historical park

  • Weldon Oral History

  • Weldon Heritage Speaker Series

  • Civic Engagement

  • Canal Trail and Aqueduct clean up

  • Summer Saturdays in the Park

  • Lights in the Night Christmas Tree and Stories

  • Bricks and Sidewalks

  • Hospitality—welcoming newcomers and guests

Support for these projects comes from donors and sponsors supplemented by income from the sale of bricks and products from All Things Weldon, our souvenir social enterprise organization.

We rely on individual contributions, supplemented by grants, to fund our general operations and most projects. Our largest projects are the Ralph J. Bunche historical park and our oral history program, for which we are also applying for grants. Applications for grants have requirements for matching funds which we must provide from our general fund or individual gifts. Every gift makes a difference in what we can do for Weldon.

RALPH J. BUNCHE HISTORICAL PARK

Imagine: You are sitting on a bench under a shade tree in a small garden, watching children play kickball in the Ralph J. Bunche Historical Park.  You are pondering what you have just read while strolling through the park: a brief history of the Ralph J. Bunche school from 1905 until 1972; display panels about the development of Weldon; tributes to principals, such as Mr. Colin P. Anthony and Mr. W. B. Davis. A walkway with inlaid engraved bricks kindles curiosity about former students and teachers.  A tall likeness of a maypole evokes images of students dancing in May to celebrate spring and the end of the school year.

With support from you, we can raise $70,000 to create a landscaped area on the site of the former school—about the size of a football field--including a walkway, gardens, and benches, on the former school site. This space will showcase historical markers and celebrate the school’s legacy.

ORAL HISTORY

See their faces.  Hear their voices.  Learn about our heritage.

Weldon In Action is undertaking an oral history program for the people of Weldon to celebrate its past, to recognize its leaders, to describe life on the river and railroad, and to acknowledge our history.

We will record the stories of people who remember life in Weldon in the 20th century, including teachers and alumni of Ralph J. Bunche school.

Their stories will be told and shown on film in various ways:  during special events, in public places, local and distant. They will be archived in libraries for scholars’ use in their research.  History will come alive!

We need your support to get started.  The estimated cost for twelve to fifteen interviews, including filming, archiving, and producing one finished product is $10,000.

Thank you.
