Canal trail project

Nestled along the scenic Roanoke River in Weldon, the Roanoke Canal Trail offers a breathtaking 7.5-mile stretch of natural beauty and outdoor serenity. As visitors embark on the trail, they are greeted by the soothing sounds of the river and surrounded by lush, green landscapes. The trail winds its way through picturesque woodlands and open spaces, providing a peaceful retreat for hikers, joggers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Along the route, the Roanoke River unveils its splendor, reflecting the changing hues of the sky and creating a harmonious blend of water and wilderness.

Despite its scenic allure, the Roanoke Canal Trail is not without its challenges. The need for improvement becomes apparent as sections of the trail show signs of overgrowth and storm debris. Currently, the trail does not follow the river entirely, as would seem the natural inclination from the Weldon trailhead at River Falls Park. Instead, visitors need to follow the path on pavement past Weldon Mills Distillery, go under the highway through a decorative tunnel, and make their way down barren First Street to rejoin the beautiful natural trail just past Riverside Mill. The bleakness of the “official” canal trail along First Street is uninviting and confusing.

As community members, we have an opportunity to make a difference. Weldon In Action envisions a canal loop trail that runs along the river up to Riverside Mill, making it possible to hike and bike the entire Canal trail without leaving the river. This will take time and planning. With leadership from a Weldon In Action member and assistance from the Halifax County Economic Development Commission, a $35,000 planning grant was secured through the NC Department of Transportation Bike and Pedestrian project to explore walkways and pedestrian needs throughout town.  Results from surveys and community input will be presented to the Town of Weldon and Weldon In Action on Monday, June 24th at the Weldon Town Council Meeting, 109 Washington Ave, Weldon, NC. This information will help to address and prioritize areas that impact public safety, public health, and recreation.

In the meantime, the existing Canal trail needs maintenance. Clean-up days are planned two to three times a year and volunteers and donations are needed. Join Us!  Local community efforts and support for trail upkeep can contribute to the longevity of this outdoor gem, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the tranquility and splendor that the Roanoke Canal Trail has to offer.

Please check our events page to see when the next canal trail clean-up will occur. We usually do one clean-up in early Spring and a second in the Fall.
