weldon sidewalk repairs

In the Fall of 2021, Weldon In Action started a project to repair the sidewalks in the 300 block of Washington Avenue. Many years before, the 100 and 200 block were improved and a border of memorial bricks was installed between the sidewalk and the curb along the street. At that time, there were insufficient funds to complete the 300 block.  In fact, many plain bricks remain in storage waiting to be used. With the Town’s knowledge and support, Weldon In Action started raising funds for the repair project by selling memorial bricks. The goal was also to make the block consistent in appearance with the other two blocks of Washington Avenue

The Town of Weldon was subsequently presented with a grant opportunity that would allow a complete revamping of the 300 block, not just repair it.  The Town applied and successfully received roughly $223,000 in funds from the Rural Transformation Grant.

The Town contracted with Bizzell Designs out of Davidson, NC to provide a holistic design for the sidewalks and a streetscape for downtown.  Shown below on this page, following the pictures of the sidewalks, are two streetscape designs. To fully implement these designs would cost more than the Town was granted. Still, they provide ideas for discussion.

Weldon In Action wants your input to share with the Weldon Town Council as they consider design options for the 300 block.  Think of what your priorities would be, share your ideas and concerns, as a citizen, as a visitor, or as a business owner. You can send any input you have to Mandy Williams at mandywilliams21@gmail.com. Drawings and paper copies of the survey are also available at Weldon Town Hall, 109 Washington Avenue. If you have any additional questions, you can email us at admin@weldoninaction.com.

Weldon In Action continues to sell engraved brick pavers for those who would like to support this effort.  Honor a loved one, share your community pride, and contribute to important projects throughout the town by purchasing a Brick Paver today- each purchase directly supports Weldon’s ongoing revitalization efforts.
